Treatment of Pericardial Mesothelioma
In majority of the cases of pericardial mesothelioma, by the time the disease is diagnosed it has already advanced to its later stages where the conventional form of treatment is no longer productive or in fact even applicable. Howsoever in some cases when the disease has been diagnosed in the earlier stages the treatment largely depends upon the age, weight, physical condition, and the medical history of the patient.

Surgery is performed in cases where the tumor is small and has not spread to the other regions. The cancerous tissue is removed from the pericardial region during the surgery. However this approach too is quite risky due to the proximity of the heart and the lungs. The option of surgical removal of the tissue is not viable if the cancer has spread to other parts of the region like chest, lungs or other organs.

Another form of analgesic treatment is sometimes performed in which the fluid from the pericardial region is extracted to relieve the pressure on the nearby organs and alleviate the patient’s suffering while other treatments are being carried out simultaneously. The withdrawn fluid can also be used for biopsy.

Radiation therapy is another option that is resorted to in which the cancerous cells are targeted with the radiation. But this approach too carries with it a risk of damaging the heart and the lungs. Another approach which is a variation of the radiation method is that of directly destroying the cancerous tissue by exposing them to the radioactive materials.

Although chemotherapeutic measures are available for other forms of mesothelioma, at present there is no such treatment available for pericardium mesothelioma.
