Causes of Pericardial Mesothelioma
It is a well known fact that excessive exposure to asbestos causes mesothelioma. The link between the pleural form of mesotheloma which is the mesotheloma of the membrane surrounding the lungs is well established. Howsoever the link between the exposure to asbestos and the pericardial mesothelioma in which the mesothelium around the heart is affected is not well known. It is quiet commonly held that the asbestos fibers once having made their way in to the lungs travel to the pericardium region through the blood stream. Once inside the pericardium region it becomes difficult to dislodge them and they start intervening with the functioning of the pericardial region. How exactly they interfere with the functioning is still a matter of investigation; however it is an established fact that they result in the excessive and an uncontrollable growth of the cells thereby resulting in the formation of malignant tumors in the pericardium. The resultant thickness in the malignant tumors leads to the bloating of the pericardium and thereby filling it with fluid. As a result the heart comes under a tremendous pressure leading to various life threatening symptoms.
